Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area is a true change agent, committed to providing an adult mentor for every child who needs or wants one. Mentoring is a proven strategy that changes how our children grow up in America by meeting critical needs of our region’s children and engaging all levels of community. We help children build the attitudes and behaviors needed to stay in school, succeed academically, make healthy choices, and create promising futures.

Curtis: A Committed Big
So that Mr. Carrington would not leave the program, staff informed the volunteer of a younger youth who needed a mentor. This youth also is a quiet individual. But Mr. Carrington is patient and lets each youth take their time with opening up to him. Mr. Carrington informed staff he “will go wherever I am needed.” And he has been mentoring for over 12 years to male youth who gained confidence, self-esteem, and better…
T’kai and Annie
When the youth graduates, she will enroll in a Business curriculum. When she graduates from the community college her dream will be realized, she can own the business and do hair. However, now the little does not want to stop there; she has her eye on a four year institution of higher learning.
Curtis and Caleb
Now the little has grown up and has better self-confidence/self-esteem. The little even has friends outside the match. The little has entered the county high school and has improved grades. Caleb is graduating from high school this year with his attention focused on a four-year institution.
Shayla: A Dream Realized
Eleven years ago, Shayla and her mom walked into the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area office to sign the Little up for a Big. Shayla always had her sights set on VCU in Richmond, Virginia and has been accepted at three Virginian universities including VCU. This Little is on her way to “Big” things.

2024 Regional Scripps Spelling Bee
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area held the Regional Spelling Bee at Averett University, Blount Chapel, on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Dante Pauley from Tunstall Middle School emerged as the winner. The winning word was toploftical, which means very superior in air or attitude. The winner is able to compete in the National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland May 26-31.
The agency is thankful for the other participants who competed for the title. BBBS of Danville Area thanks the host, pronouncer, and judges who assisted in making this Regional Bee possible. For more information about the Bee and BBBS of Danville Area, call 434-773-8394.
Big Brothers Big Sisters at Capitol Hill
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area CEO Pat Daniel attended BBBS at Capitol Hill Day in Washington DC on February 28, 2024. 115 BBBS agency leaders from 91 agencies from 31 states were in attendance as well as local BBBS affiliate CEO's, National Staff, and BBBS Board of Directors members. Attendees visited 165 congressional and/or senate offices. Pictured with our CEO in the first photo are Sandra Erickson of BBBS Fredericksburg and Ellie Martinez of Richmon, VA to Hampton Roads, VA.
