Be a Big

As a Big Brother or Big Sister, you can experience childhood again for a couple of hours a week. All you have to do is be a friend to a child in your community. Sharing every day experiences with a child is the premise on which Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area is based. We have been transforming lives since 1973, and have developed several successful programs proven to make a BIG difference in the life of a child.

Becoming a Big is a fun and easy way to volunteer in your community. We have several program options that fit your schedule and interests.We also offer a variety of agency-planned activities for Bigs and Littles, like the Big Brothers Big Sisters Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake. In this section, learn about the different program options we offer, the application process and what to expect once you’ve become a Big.

DO I QUALIFY?

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area has specific requirements for our mentoring programs.

Potential Bigs:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a valid Virginia Drivers license.
  • Have had no DUI within the past 2 years.
  • Must be a resident of Danville or Pittsylvania County.
  • Must have an interest in children ages 6-14.
  • Are subject to a criminal background check and a Child Protective Services check.
  • Must provide a minimum of three references.

A child with a mentor is 52% less likely to skip school than a child without a mentor.

  • Bigs, Littles, and Board Members Attend Rodney Marsalis’ Big Brass Band Concert

    Sat Apr 30, BBBS of Danville Area Littles, Bigs, and board members attended the Rodney Marsalis' Big Brass Band concert at Pritchett Auditorium. One of the Littles, Demond, commented that he really had a good time even though he had never experienced a jazz concert before. The youth were greeted by Dr. Angela Hairston, DPS, and Mr. Cedric Hairston, PCPS. Thanks to Danville Concert Association for donation of tickets for littles chaperones.

  • Big and Littles Attend The MJ Experience at Danville’s North Theater

    On May 1, 2022, BBBS of Danville Area Littles, Malachi, Marquarius, Zedikiah, and Zachariah attended with Big Mike Mondul, Danville's Sheriff, The MJ Experience at the North Theater. Afterwards, the group went to dinner where they had dinner for a King. Thanks to the collaboration that we had with Aces and other board members that we were able to provide tickets to these events.

  • 2022 Scripps Regional Spelling Bee

    Saturday March 19, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area sponsored the annual Scripps Regional Spelling Bee. Out of 28 registered participants and after 22 rounds, Gavin Maxey from Dan River Middle School emerged as the winner. We wish Gavin good luck as he prepares for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Special thanks to AU CCECC, Tia Yancey, and Dr. Marc Muneal.
