Match of the Month (November 2012)

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area has named Melvena Beasley and Tamir Wimbush as its Match of the Month for November. Beasley has made a difference in Tamir’s life by being a friend and showing Tamir the “positive” aspects of life.

Melvena Beasley is a volunteer in Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Mentoring Program. She and her little have been matched in the community program for one year. Beasley sees her little and stays in contact with her regularly.

Not only does Beasley do activities with Tamir but she devotes her time in helping tutor Tamir. Also, Beasley encourages Tamir to have high self-esteem. Beasley has not only developed a great relationship with Tamir but with her mother as well.
Since Tamir has been matched with Beasley, her grades and school performance has improved. There has also been an improvement in Tamir’s self teem and confidence. Tamir is now open to expressing her feelings.

Parent states that having Tamir in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program is the best thing that has ever happened to her. “They have a great relationship and Beasley is a good mentor to Tamir.”

Each month, the agency selects a match to receive this special honor. The award recognizes the commitment that a volunteer mentor and child have made to each other and the organization in developing a special friendship.
