On Tuesday, December 9, was the Decorate A Tree For A Cause event at the Institute of Advanced Learning and Research. Here our very own executive director, Pat Daniel is pictured with our board member, Petrina Carter by our tree representing BBBS entitled, “Candyland…Where Kids’ Dreams Come True”.
This past Saturday was our annual Christmas Pancake Breakfast and it was a success! A delightful breakfast was served, book bags, fruit bags, gift cards and BBBS sweatshirts were given to the children. They also participated in holiday crafts as well as games like “Four Square” and “Hot Potato”; while some volunteers and staff joined in as well. You may donate towards the tree/organization of your choice starting Dec. 1-9. The three top organizations who raise the most money will be placed in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Sheriff Mike Mondul is a dedicated Big Brother. He and his little have been matched for almost three years. He acts as a mentor, guidance counselor, coach, and community advocate. Mike teaches the youth to exercise and have healthy eating habits. In addition, the little is being taught to be a community advocate as well. Dr. Tamara Webster devotes time with her little, Jasmine. Even though she has a busy schedule she often text her little sister. They go on outings together. Whenever the youth moves, the volunteer continues the match. Tamara hardly misses any activities the agency offers. She often listens to her little sister when she opens up to talk to her. The volunteer states, “I enjoy the match!” The youth has improved with self-esteem and self-confidence….
On November 3, a few of our little’s and a few Big Brothers had a training at Texas Steakhouse where the trainer was 4H agent, Tadashi Totten from the Virginia Corporate Ext. There was also games and activities, dinner was provided and there was lots of fun. This event was sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.
On Monday, October 27, a few of our little’s visited The Rigney Farm. After the farm tour, which included feeding the cows, they grilled hot dogs and roasted marshmallows. This event was sponsored by the Mt. Hermon Willing Servants Sunday School Class.
On Monday, October 20, was our girl’s turn to head out to Owen Farm, Dry Fork, VA. They were also given a tour of the farm and picked pumpkins from the garden. Following was a cookout that they thoroughly enjoyed. This event was sponsored by the Junior Wednesday Club. We would like to thank the Junior Wednesday Club for their attendance and support!
On Saturday, October 18, The Farm Raiser was a success and we would like to take the time out to thank everyone who contributed to this wonderful event. 2024 Regional Scripps Spelling Bee
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area held the Regional Spelling Bee at Averett University, Blount Chapel, on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Dante Pauley from Tunstall Middle School emerged as the winner. The winning word was toploftical, which means very superior in air or attitude. The winner is able to compete in the National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Maryland May 26-31.

Big Brothers Big Sisters at Capitol Hill
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area CEO Pat Daniel attended BBBS at Capitol Hill Day in Washington DC on February 28, 2024. 115 BBBS agency leaders from 91 agencies from 31 states were in attendance as well as local BBBS affiliate CEO's, National Staff, and BBBS Board of Directors members.
