Fire Chief David Coffey

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area

Mr. Coffey was nominated “Volunteer of the Year” for a variety of reasons. He was told about a young man who really needed a mentor in his life.

This young man has a form of autism. At school, he would sit by himself during lunch and did not interact with other students often. The grandmother stated he had a close relationship with his grandfather who passed away who lived in the home and cared for the youth deeply.

Mr. Coffey has made a difference in his Little’s life. He has helped him socially as well as helping him to learn to do things on his own, like tying his shoes. The grandmother will often state when the youth would get in trouble at school with his behavrior, she will tell him, “I’m going to call Mr. David.” In return, the youth will calm down. They both stated they loved Mr. David. She will ask when the youth gets in trouble at school with his behavior, “Are you going to take Mr. David away from him?” Each time, the answer would be “no.” He is there to help him.

Mr. Coffey takes time out to explain to the youth about his actions, the consequences of his behavior, and how to handle things differently. The youth has less blowups and is doing better with his behavior as well.

The youth appreciates the volunteer so much that he dressed up as a fireman for Halloween one year since his mentor is the Fire Chief for the city. The grandmother stated that the youth really did need someone who is understanding and has patience to work with the youth. Mr. Coffey is that person. He does everything. He can not only help the youth but assist the grandmother as well.
