On Monday, March 21, a few littles of Big Brothers Big Sisters attended a Spring Event held at the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. Joe Nicholson and members of the Willing Servants Sunday School Class hosted the event. The kids enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and Pizza Party. Joe presented “The Real Meaning of Easter.”
Our annual fundraiser, was held on Saturday, March 12, 2016. There was bowling, games, face painting and door prizes. Thanks to all our supporters, volunteers, and staff.
Trevor West is a graduating senior at Averett University. He has been a member of the Men’s Basketball Team for four years. Most important, he has been a dedicated volunteer all that time. The Big weekly visits his little, Shawn and spends time encouraging and giving him solid advice. Trevor and Shawn have a great relationship. Curtis Carrington has been associated with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area’s program for over five years. He has been a school based mentor as well as a community based volunteer. He focuses on assisting the youth with improving self- esteem and confidence. On Monday, February 8, 2016, eight girls of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area attended a Yoga Class hosted by The Junior Wednesday Club. The class was held at the United Way in the Large Conference Room. A certified Yoga Instructor walked the youth through the steps of the program. Each child was given a healthy eating sheet and a yoga mat. The evening ended with a delicious healthy meal.
Todd Fitts has participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for several years. He mentored several youth in the in-school program where he was introduced to his little, Chad Hill. Todd first started with our mentoring children of prisoners program. He has had several mentees since 2008. The majority of his time has been spent with Chad Hill. On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, Mayor Sherman M. Saunders of the Council Chamber presented Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area with a Certificate of Recognition for January’s “Mentoring Month”. The award was accepted by Executive Patricia M. Daniel for the number of children that they serve and how they positively alter their lives through quality matches of Bigs and Littles.
On Monday, January 11, 2016 sixteen young ladies in our program were treated to manicures at Elegant Nails and to dinner at San Marcos. Members of The Junior Wednesday Club were in attendance as well. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area provides one-to-one mentoring for children in Danville and Pittsylvania County, serving over 300 children annually.
J. Hoffman, J. Word, M. Beasley (Board Chair), S Wingate, E. A. Woody, E. White, J. Menefee, and M. Mondul attended a Board of Directors meeting for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area. The meeting was held at Caesar's Virginia on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
BBBS Capitol Hill Day took place in Washington DC on Feb 26. The training sessions focused on Senate and Congressional Presentations. The trip ended with visits to Senators Kaine and Warner's offices and Congresspersons John McGuire, Jennifer McClellan, and Ben Cline.
