On Tuesday, July 5th – Thursday, July 8th, nine girls of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area participated in the swimming camp at the YMCA of Danville, VA. The youth were given lessons on how to propel themselves through the water, how to float, and how to maintain themselves in deep water. The girls had a great time learning how to swim.
On Thursday, June 24th, 22 littles, parents, and some friends from Cedar Terrace gathered at the United Way Large Conference Room for a workshop on Gun Safety. Corporal Tim Scearce of the Danville Police Department shared a video, an on-line test about drug abuse, and uniform props. This event was sponsored by the Community Foundation of Dan River Region.
On Wednesday, June 22, 30 children and 5 chaperones traveled to Greensboro, NC for the Universoul Circus. The littles’ favorite acts were the elephant rides, magic show, and the motorcycle acrobatics. The dancers from all over the world had the children on the feet and moving. The event was sponsored by the Hughes Memorial Foundation and O’kelly’s Restaurant.
Connor Hudson is a young college student who enjoys outdoor activities. He has assisted the youth, Nasir, with behavior and his confidence. They enjoy going to the youth’s favorite places. Melvena Beasley has assisted youth with school performance throughout the years. She focuses on helping youth with self-confidence, self-esteem, and academic performance. On May 7th and 14th of 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area participated in The Make Danville Shine project. On the 7th, the mentoring group passed out bags of bird seed to visitors at the Community Market. In addition, two residents won bird feeders. On Friday, May 6, 14 children along with 5 volunteers attended the Belmont Estate in Reidsville, North Carolina. There was an etiquette training during dinner followed by a tour of the estate by owner, Mr. Charlie Adams. It was a great learning experience for the youth and adults.
The Local Scripps Spelling Bee Champion; Luke Garcia, will be moving on to Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 22nd- 28th. The competition will be held at the Gaylord National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Approximately 285 spellers will be participating in the National Scripps Spelling Bee. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area provides one-to-one mentoring for children in Danville and Pittsylvania County, serving over 300 children annually.
On Monday, July 27, 2026, the SAO Consortium, which includes Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area traveled to Salisbury, NC to Livingstone College and Catawba College. Twenty students and seven chaperones toured the campuses that included the chapels, radio/podcasts, admissions, Divine Nine Yard, academic buildings, and environmental areas. The presenters gave information about the academic degrees and sports offerings.

Today is the 53rd Anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area! BBBS was founded by Judge Spiros Skendaris with the aim of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1:1 relationships that change their lives for the better.

On June 13, Chuck Eskey and Marine Corps Toys for Tots sponsored a Fishing Trip at Deerwood Springs Creek in Blairs, VA. 10 children from BBBS attended, and all were first-time fishers. One first-time fisher, pictured in photo 3, caught 2 fish! Volunteers from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries taught and helped the children fish. There was plenty of fishing and food provided by O'Kelly's.
The youth had snacks, deli sandwiches, and ice cream to eat, and they played cornhole and other fishing games. Bookbags were given as gifts according to age group. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible!
