Danville’s National Night Out was held on Oct 8 at Westmoreland. Assistant Police Chief David Whitley and Police Advisory Member Pat Daniel were pictured together at the community event. The plan is for Assistant Chief and BBBS to work together throughout their assignment to improve the lives of the Danville community.

On July 24, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area hosted George Bell, Guinness World Record’s tallest man at 7 ft 8 in tall. George visited with 100 children and youth to talk about bullying. He taught the youth to not bully and to not allow others to bully them. The youth were treated to an early dinner afterwards.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area, The Salvation Army of Danville, Virginia, Danville Church & Community Tutorial Program, and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area took a trip to Washington DC July 18-19. There were 51 in total who visited DC, 17 of which were from BBBS. Everyone visited Blackburn Hall at Howard University to see the School of Social Work where they learned about admissions, financial aid, and school programs….

On April 25, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area enjoyed a picnic dinner on the grounds of the Danville Farmers Market. The Danville Concert Association provided free tickets for 14 youth and 3 chaperones to attend a concert at the Pavillion for the Atlanta Symphony Pops. The youth are looking forward to the next classical outing.
On April 24, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area enjoyed an evening at Riverside Lanes. They bowled with and without the bumpers. Ahmir had the highest score of 118. Everyone had fun and celebrated with a snack from the concession stand.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area held the Regional Spelling Bee at Averett University, Blount Chapel, on Saturday, March 16, 2024. Dante Pauley from Tunstall Middle School emerged as the winner. The winning word was toploftical, which means very superior in air or attitude. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area provides one-to-one mentoring for children in Danville and Pittsylvania County, serving over 300 children annually.
On Monday, July 27, 2026, the SAO Consortium, which includes Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area traveled to Salisbury, NC to Livingstone College and Catawba College. Twenty students and seven chaperones toured the campuses that included the chapels, radio/podcasts, admissions, Divine Nine Yard, academic buildings, and environmental areas. The presenters gave information about the academic degrees and sports offerings.

Today is the 53rd Anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area! BBBS was founded by Judge Spiros Skendaris with the aim of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1:1 relationships that change their lives for the better.

On June 13, Chuck Eskey and Marine Corps Toys for Tots sponsored a Fishing Trip at Deerwood Springs Creek in Blairs, VA. 10 children from BBBS attended, and all were first-time fishers. One first-time fisher, pictured in photo 3, caught 2 fish! Volunteers from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries taught and helped the children fish. There was plenty of fishing and food provided by O'Kelly's.
The youth had snacks, deli sandwiches, and ice cream to eat, and they played cornhole and other fishing games. Bookbags were given as gifts according to age group. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible!
