Local Scripps Spelling Bee Champion Moving to Compete in National Competition

The Local Scripps Spelling Bee Champion; Luke Garcia, will be moving on to Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 22nd- 28th. The competition will be held at the Gaylord National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Approximately 285 spellers will be participating  in the National Scripps Spelling Bee. On Saturday, April 9th, 2016, ten youth of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area attended an SOL Prep Game Day at the Alpha Phi Omega House in Danville, VA. The children were given games and activities to prepare them for the Math portion of the SOL’s. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves as they learned and fellowshipped. A Discussion About School Discipline

On Tuesday, April 12, 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area hosted a session entitled, “A Discussion About School Discipline.” 20 mentors, parents, and youth attended the session sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region.  Dr. Stanley B. Jones, Superintendent of Danville Public Schools  was the guest speaker.  He spoke about school discipline and what your next step should be in that situation.

Littles Visit the Gretna Theatre

On Friday, April 1, 2016, 13 youth of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area traveled to Gretna, VA to the . The hostesses for this event was Big Brothers Big Sisters board member and Gretna theatre owner, Marie Young and board member, Kate Berger. Marie Young  treated the children to games and  activities. A pizza lunch was given followed by the movie, “Alvin and the Chipmunks”. The children had an awesome time!

Littles Attend Spring Event

On Monday, March 21, a few littles of Big Brothers Big Sisters attended a Spring Event held at the Mt. Hermon Baptist Church. Joe Nicholson and members of the Willing Servants Sunday School Class hosted the event.  The kids enjoyed an Easter Egg Hunt and Pizza Party. Joe  presented “The Real Meaning of Easter.”
