Dr. Edward White has been a part of BBBS since the 1970s. He’s been past president of the BBBS of Danville Area’s Board and currently serves as treasurer. He has been responsible for board governance an oversight for our organization. Most recently, he has participated in the Cherry Blossom Train Trip to Washington D.C. as “Big For a Day”. It’s good to have Ed in our corner!
On December 12, 2015, Big Brothers Big Brothers Big Sisters traveled to Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. They attended “Youth Day” where the Liberty University Flames played against the Lamar University Cardinals. The children were given Santa hats, took pictures and were given popcorn. Ten “Littles”, two volunteers and 1 staff member attended this trip. This event ended with dinner. The entire trip was sponsored by Community Foundation of Dan River Region.
On November 23, 2015 10 littles attended a tour of Averett University. They were accompanied by the Cherrystone Men’s Division. Following the tour they all enjoyed dinner in the campus Dining Hall.
Cara Burton came to Big Brothers Big Sisters to talk about programs at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts. She asked that we send her an application to be a “Big”. The magical process began from there. Mr. Henry Luck came to the Big Brothers Big Sisters office and said that he wanted to help young people in the area. He was matched with a young man named Amarien over two years ago. On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 11 youth, along with members of The Jr. Wednesday Club, visited Averett University and toured the campus. Following the tour was dinner at the Dining Hall. Then, Marquitta Graves, Associate Registrar and Alexa Ehrhardt, Executive Director of the Center For Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness, gave the youth a presentation about the University.
Cynthia Harris wanted to give back to the Community by assisting a youth in need of a mentor. The volunteer started out in the School Based program but felt she could do more by becoming a community based mentor. She focuses on introducing youth to new experiences and improving with academic and school performance. She uses her professional skills to teach the youth social skills. On Tuesday, October 20th, a few youth of BBBS of Danville Area visited Tiny Town Golf in Danville, VA. At this event, the “littles” and a few members of The Rotary After Hours club came together and had a wonderful time!
Rebecca Deel is matched with a young female who is shy. She does not let that affect the match. They often go out to different places. Going to the movies, skating, and baking are a few things they like to do. Although they have been matched over two years, the volunteer continues to assist the youth with improving her self-esteem. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area provides one-to-one mentoring for children in Danville and Pittsylvania County, serving over 300 children annually.
J. Hoffman, J. Word, M. Beasley (Board Chair), S Wingate, E. A. Woody, E. White, J. Menefee, and M. Mondul attended a Board of Directors meeting for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area. The meeting was held at Caesar's Virginia on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
BBBS Capitol Hill Day took place in Washington DC on Feb 26. The training sessions focused on Senate and Congressional Presentations. The trip ended with visits to Senators Kaine and Warner's offices and Congresspersons John McGuire, Jennifer McClellan, and Ben Cline.
