BBBS of Danville Area Receives Certificate of Recognition for January’s “Mentoring Month”
On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, Mayor Sherman M. Saunders of the Council Chamber presented Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area with a Certificate of Recognition for January’s “Mentoring Month”. The award was accepted by Executive Patricia M. Daniel for the number of children that they serve and how they positively alter their lives through quality matches of Bigs and Littles.
Littles Treated to Manicures & Dinner
On Monday, January 11, 2016 sixteen young ladies in our program were treated to manicures at Elegant Nails and to dinner at San Marcos. Members of The Junior Wednesday Club were in attendance as well. They all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
“Having someone In Their Corner… Can Change Their World” – BBBS of NYC
Dr. Edward White has been a part of BBBS since the 1970s. He’s been past president of the BBBS of Danville Area’s Board and currently serves as treasurer. He has been responsible for board governance an oversight for our organization. Most recently, he has participated in the Cherry Blossom Train Trip to Washington D.C. as “Big For a Day”. It’s good to have Ed in our corner!
Littles Attend Youth Day at Liberty University
On December 12, 2015, Big Brothers Big Brothers Big Sisters traveled to Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. They attended “Youth Day” where the Liberty University Flames played against the Lamar University Cardinals. The children were given Santa hats, took pictures and were given popcorn. Ten “Littles”, two volunteers and 1 staff member attended this trip. This event ended with dinner. The entire trip was sponsored by Community Foundation of Dan River Region.
Littles Tour Averett University
On November 23, 2015 10 littles attended a tour of Averett University. They were accompanied by the Cherrystone Men’s Division. Following the tour they all enjoyed dinner in the campus Dining Hall.
Big/Little of November Announced
Cara Burton came to Big Brothers Big Sisters to talk about programs at the Danville Museum of Fine Arts. She asked that we send her an application to be a “Big”. The magical process began from there. Cara is always concerned about her “little” and her school work. She makes sure that she is active in the arts, the community, and resort life. Big/Little of October Announced
Mr. Henry Luck came to the Big Brothers Big Sisters office and said that he wanted to help young people in the area. He was matched with a young man named Amarien over two years ago. Deacon Luck encourages the “little” in his school work and manners. They do a lot of physical activities together like playing catch. Averett University Tour
On Tuesday, November 3, 2015 11 youth, along with members of The Jr. Wednesday Club, visited Averett University and toured the campus. Following the tour was dinner at the Dining Hall. Then, Marquitta Graves, Associate Registrar and Alexa Ehrhardt, Executive Director of the Center For Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness, gave the youth a presentation about the University.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area provides one-to-one mentoring for children in Danville and Pittsylvania County, serving over 300 children annually.

SAO Consortium and BBBS College Tours
On Monday, July 27, 2026, the SAO Consortium, which includes Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area traveled to Salisbury, NC to Livingstone College and Catawba College. Twenty students and seven chaperones toured the campuses that included the chapels, radio/podcasts, admissions, Divine Nine Yard, academic buildings, and environmental areas. The presenters gave information about the academic degrees and sports offerings.

Today is the 53rd Anniversary of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Danville Area! BBBS was founded by Judge Spiros Skendaris with the aim of providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1:1 relationships that change their lives for the better.

Let’s Go Fishing
On June 13, Chuck Eskey and Marine Corps Toys for Tots sponsored a Fishing Trip at Deerwood Springs Creek in Blairs, VA. 10 children from BBBS attended, and all were first-time fishers. One first-time fisher, pictured in photo 3, caught 2 fish! Volunteers from the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries taught and helped the children fish. There was plenty of fishing and food provided by O'Kelly's.
The youth had snacks, deli sandwiches, and ice cream to eat, and they played cornhole and other fishing games. Bookbags were given as gifts according to age group. Thank you to our sponsors and volunteers for making this event possible!
